The Flower Mound Wildcats Select Basketball Program was established by Coach Bill Milam in January, 2003. It began with a group of eager 8-10 year old kids, most of whom had never played organized basketball. With a group of great parents, and kids who were eager to learn, we added fun to the teaching of the sport. As a result of their hard work, the kids achieved a 19-7 record.
Some of the kids stayed together as Coach Milam moved up to the 11-12 year old age group. They joined with a few new players to achieve a record of 61-7 over the next two years. They also participated in the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation (TAAF) tournaments and Prime Time Sports (PTS) tournaments. They qualified for:
2004 TAAF State tournament
2004 PTS State tournament
2005 TAAF National tournament.
In the Fall, 2004, the Wildcats Select Basketball Program added a second team consisting of 13-15 year olds. These Wildcats Select teams achieved a record of 65-1 through the Spring of 2006. In addition, they qualified for:
2005 PTS National tournament in the 8th Grade division
2006 TAAF State tournament in the 14U division
2006 PTS National tournament in the 9th/10th Grade division
The success of the Wildcats Select Basketball Program continued to grow. New players were added each session. The Wildcats Select teams completed the Fall 2, 2006, session by continuing their winning tradition achieving a new cumulative record of 158 - 16 in league play.
The Spring of 2007 saw the Wildcats Select Basketball Program grow to three teams... 8th Grade, 9th Grade and a 10th Grade Wildcats teams.
The 8th grade Wildcats team competed in the 11-team Coppell Spring League with teams from the surrounding North Texas area. The team finished 2nd in the league with an 8-2 record.
The 9th and 10th grade Wildcats teams competed in a BCI sponsored High School Varsity Division league. Teams were from Mansfield, Arlington and other North Texas areas. The 9th graders finished 3rd in the league with a 4-2 record. The 10th grade team won 1st place and the league championship, achieving a record of 5-1. The 10th grade team also competed in the PTS tournaments, winning a championship for the 10th grade division. This enabled the Wildcats to qualify for the PTS National tournament for the fourth consecutive year. They also achieved a second and third place in two additional PTS tournaments. The success of these three Wildcats teams raised the new league record of 175 - 21.
As we moved into the Fall, 2007, the Wildcats Select Basketball Program entered a 9th Grade team into the Coppell Fall League, against teams from the DFW area. The Wildcats finished with a 7-1 record against teams for the North Texas area. Our goal was to better prepare the individual players to compete for a position on their respective school teams. We continued to focus on individual and positional play. The kids learned insight into playing specific positions on the court, and how to recognize advantages and disadvantages they may encounter during a game. We continued to stress the importance of:
1) individual effort
2) taking responsibility for one's actions on and off the court
3) how their actions impact the overall effectiveness of team play.
The Spring, 2008, Wildcats Select Basketball Program included a 9th Grade team and an 11th Grade Varsity team. The 9th Graders competed in the Upper Division of the Coppell Spring League, going 10 – 0 against teams from the North Texas area. The 11th Grade Varsity team competed in PTS tournaments, winning second place and qualifying for the fifth consecutive year for the PTS National tournament. Together with the results of these Wildcats teams, and earlier tournament play, the Wildcats Select Basketball Program has achieved a record of 224 – 26 over the past five years.
The Wildcats Select Basketball Program takes great pride in the positive impact we have achieved with the players who have been involved with our program. We continue to believe that teaching the complexities of this sport in a positive environment better prepares the kids to achieve their goals in basketball.
We also take great pride in the achievements our players have had with their respective high schools. We have shown below the number of kids who have participated in our Wildcats Select Basketball Program during the 2005-2006, 2006-2007, 2007-2008 and 2008-2009 basketball seasons.
